Cara DesJardins, Owner/Designer
Established in 2013, C.A.S. Handmade Inc. is the creation of Cara DesJardins. A native Rhode Islander, Cara was exposed to sewing and textile design at an early age. From this seed there sprouted a unique line of stylish bags, totes, clutches, home textiles and clothes.
Cara graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in textile engineering and earned over ten years experience designing and creating at several textile companies. She took her passion to the next level, combining her love for fabrics, color, and craftsmanship, and developed a line of custom handbags and pillows made from all-natural, hand-painted linen and leather. The natural linen complements the earth mineral pigments she uses to paint her bags. Cara creates a very natural, simplistic style that she strives to maintain in each of her bag styles.
This bag is made of full grain leather, which refers to hides that have not been sanded, buffed or snuffed to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide. The grain remains allowing high fiber strength and the most durability of all leathers. The grain also has breathability, resulting in less moisture from prolonged contact. Rather than wearing out, it develops a patina during its expected used lifetime.
For lighter colors:
To remove surface dirt we recommend using Otter Wax Saddle Soap. Using a wet damp cloth, wash the entire bag with the soap and let dry. Your bag will change color when it is wet, but DON’T PANIC! Your bag will dry its original color. Take a damp cloth to remove the saddle soap and let dry again.
We’ve been told on good authority that for less maintenance when buying lighter color leather goods, you can purchase a full-grain leather spray sold at any high-end shoe store. We do not believe in using chemicals and prefer to keep our hides natural. We don’t apply chemical spray to our leather, but once you purchase, you can do with it what you will!
C.A.S. chooses full grain leather because they prefer the natural imperfections, the durability, and the patina that full grain leather forms after time. Understand the lighter colors can get dirty, but if cared for doing the above you will have a beautiful bag for a very long time. Do take care to watch for dye transfer from dark wash denim, particularly with a crossbody style bag. Should you spot dye transfer on your bag, do clean your bag with saddle soap right away.
For darker colors: We recommend Otter Wax Leather Salve once a year to condition your bag; it will create a beautiful patina over time.
C.A.S. Handmade Guarantees their bags, which includes any free repairs over the life of the bag due any defect of manufacture, including any stitching issues etc., basic wear and tear is not included. We’ve never sent a bag for defect of manufacture because these bags are AMAZING.
C.A.S. Handmade also offers a service to clean your bag for you at their studio for the lifetime of the bag; this includes a full cleaning and conditioning a three-day process. The cleaning fee is $40 plus shipping.
